How your favourite businesses become winners

The Best of Bluff Readers’ Choice Awards are built on one simple principle – the community decides.

The process is designed to be fair, transparent and inclusive, giving residents the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the local businesses, services and organisations they believe deserve to be honoured.

It all begins with the nomination phase, when members of the community nominate their favourite businesses across a wide range of categories through the official Best of Bluff website. Once nominations close, only businesses receiving more than two valid nominations in each category progress to the final voting stage.

During the voting phase, the community once again takes the lead by selecting their favourite finalists. Voting is conducted exclusively through the official online platform, making it quick, secure and accessible to everyone.

To protect the integrity of the awards, the voting system incorporates safeguards to detect and prevent duplicate or suspicious voting activity. All nominations and votes are validated and audited before the winners are announced.

Most importantly, businesses cannot buy awards or influence the results. Every winner earns their title through genuine public support, ensuring the awards remain a true reflection of the community’s choices.

Year after year, this transparent process has made the Best of Bluff Readers’ Choice Awards one of the region’s most trusted and respected celebrations of local excellence.

Behind every great award is a great team

While thousands of community members cast their votes to recognise their favourite local businesses, a great deal of work takes place behind the scenes to ensure the Best of Bluff Readers’ Choice Awards remain fair, transparent and credible.

Leading that process is Natasha Karamchund, Best of competitions project manager based at the Highway Mail office in New Germany, who oversees the Best of Toti, the Best of Bluff and Best of Durban Readers’ Choice Awards.

“My role in the Best of Awards is to oversee the planning, coordination and execution of the campaign, ensuring that every stage is managed professionally and transparently,” said Natasha.

“I work closely with our internal teams to coordinate the nominations and voting process, monitor campaign performance, communicate with participating businesses and ensure that all timelines and procedures are followed. I also manage client relationships, campaign promotions and public engagement, helping businesses maximise their participation while maintaining the integrity of the awards.”

A key part of Natasha’s role is ensuring the awards process remains fair and accessible to everyone.

“I work alongside our technical and support teams to ensure the online platform operates smoothly, that voting guidelines are clearly communicated and that any queries from businesses or voters are addressed promptly. Once voting closes, I assist in overseeing the verification process before the final winners are confirmed,” she explained.

For Natasha, the goal is simple – to deliver a trusted, community-driven awards programme that celebrates local excellence while maintaining the confidence of both readers and participating businesses.

“Ultimately, my responsibility is to help deliver a credible, community-driven awards programme that celebrates local businesses while maintaining the trust of the readers and the businesses that participate.”
