Sungardens thrift shop empowers through generosity

For Sungardens Palliative Care, finding a bargain at its thrift shop can mean much more than taking something special home.

The Sungardens Retail Store has been named the Best Thrift Shop in the 2026 Best of Pretoria Awards, recognising its popularity among shoppers and the broader work it does to support patients and families.

Sungardens Palliative Care has cared for people living with life-limiting illnesses for 40 years, while also supporting families navigating difficult health journeys.

General manager Pieter van Heerden said the Retail Store plays an important role in helping the organisation continue providing these services.

“The store is powered by the generosity of people who donate and the support of people who shop with us,” said van Heerden.

“The proceeds from the store help fund the care and services provided by Sungardens Palliative Care.”

He said the store brings the community into the organisation’s work in a meaningful way.

“Someone gives, someone finds, and together it helps make care possible,” he said.

Van Heerden said the Best of Pretoria recognition was especially significant because it celebrates both the store and the work behind it.

He added that having the Retail Store recognised by the Pretoria community is incredibly meaningful, as the recognition shines a light on the charitable work the store helps make possible.

The award also recognises the effort the Sungardens team puts into creating a positive customer experience.

“It tells us that the work, the care and the effort that go into creating a good experience for our customers are being noticed and appreciated,” said Van Heerden.

The manager believes the combination of discovery and purpose sets the store apart.

“There is always that little bit of excitement when you walk into a thrift store because you never know what you might find,” he continued.

“But at our store, there is also an emotional connection behind every purchase.”

Van Heerden said the organisation hopes the recognition will encourage more people to visit the store and learn about Sungardens Palliative Care’s work.

He added that their goal isn’t to grow for growth’s sake, but to become a stronger part of the community.

Van Heerden thanked everyone who voted for the store, saying every vote, donation and purchase helps make a difference.

“Our purpose has always been bigger than an award. We are here to care for people and support their families.”

The Sungardens Retail Store is situated at 18 Twig Street, Lynnwood Glen, Pretoria.
